Before watching the video the only reading we had done on Nike factories was the way they have positively effected and influenced cultures and economy in the Third World.  I thought these readings made some sense because obviously the increased number of jobs in these Third World countries and higher wages for these jobs will help the economy of these nations grow.  I also knew from common sense that these new jobs were created because Americans were losing their jobs which are something I did not like to see and agree with.  After watching the video, I now see the negative effects on the countries gaining factories in addition to Americans losing jobs.  The video showed that the Nike workers are not allowed to form Union Groups and fight for their rights if they feel they are being treated poorly or underpaid.  I believe this is unfair because it allows the factory to have total control over the workers and treat them however they please.  This obviously isn’t fair to the worker whatsoever because workers have a right to fight for their treatment, wages, and conditions if they are unfair.  Additionally, I also found out that 80% of these new Nike employees are women.  This is good for the women because it is probably the best and highest paid jobs they ever had.  However, the hiring of women is bad because of the real reason why the factory is hiring them.  They are hiring women because they feel they can boss the women around and force them to do whatever the factory wants.  They feel that women are weaker and won’t speak out against the factory so the factory is trying to overpower their employees and have complete control over them.  I think that this has negatively influenced my opinion of Nike to change because they are depriving people (mostly women) of their rights and not allowing them to form Unions shows this. So even though these women now have jobs with higher wages and supposedly better conditions, I feel that these Nike factories are abusing their power.  If these factories were in the United States, the wages, conditions, and not allowing the formation of Unions would all be considered horrible things.  Just because these factories are in a different country doesn’t mean the level of these things should lower.  I believe that Nike is taking advantage of weak economies for the sole purpose of maximizing their profit and in doing so, they are being unfair and treating their workers poorly.
