The main point of this essay is how big of a deal English is in America. In many countries, there are hundreds of languages spoken with a handful of dominant languages. However, in America, English is spoken by over 80% of the population. Sadly, most of us Americans only know parts of other languages and English is our only fluent language. Living in the most diverse country in the world, I think it is a sad statistic that most of us just know how to speak in English. Also, the fact that some towns in the United States don’t allow signs that aren’t labeled in English is pretty sad. If everyday Americans aren’t required to know more than one language why should immigrants living in the United States be required to know English. Although English is by far the most popular language in America, it is not required to be spoken by all citizens so denying Korean language only signs is ridiculous. However, I do think that all people in the United States should be required to know enough English to communicate. If you can’t communicate with a person in a butcher shop, such as the mother of the author of this essay, you will obviously be treated poorly and yelled at for many things. But also, I believe that all Americans should be able to communicate in a second language such as Spanish, because more than 10% of the population speaks Spanish. Language is so important in life so speaking just one will not get you buy, especially in today’s world surrounded by the effects of globalization and living in the most diverse country of the world, the United States of America.
